Digipack Plan

For our digipack, we decided to base the design on two main themes, which we felt were aesthetically pleasing and fitting to the indie pop genre. These were polaroids, and a colour scheme of black and blue. We thought that this would be suitable as indie culture often modernises vintage items, such as polaroid cameras and vinyl records.

Firstly, for the front cover of our album -- the bottom right square of the plan -- we decided to have quite a simple cover, as this is common in indie pop albums, with our artist on the front. However, our artist will not be looking directly at the camera, but will instead be looking off to the left. This is a method that is used by many indie artists, such as James Bay and Halsey.

For the back cover of our album, the bottom middle square, we have decided to contribute to the polaroid theme by having a photograph of a pile of polaroid photos. This will include photos of our artist, and photos of scenery.

For the CD itself, in the top middle square, we decided to style it in the design of a polaroid camera, with the hole in the middle of the CD being the lens. This once again adds to the polaroid theme, and we thought that it would be a quirky and interesting use of the CD's shape and design.

Lastly, for the three other squares of the CD we will have a variety of different designs. For the top right we are going to have a shutter speed photo of the artist, Robin, drawing the letter 'R' in the air with a blue light. This will therefore create the effect of painting with a neon light, which will add to the black and blue theme of our album. For the top left we are going to have one polaroid picture, with a photo of a bath filled with blue flowers and a blue bathbomb. We will then write one of the lyrics of our song, 'Shark' by Oh Wonder, on the photo in black marker. We took this inspiration from typically 'indie' photos online, and therefore felt it would fit well with our artist's image. Finally, for the bottom right we will use a photo of our artist holding a blue polaroid camera up to her face, in order to contribute to the polaroid theme as well as the black and blue colour scheme.

In order to include our chosen song in our music video, we had to get permission from the artist, Oh Wonder, to be allowed to use their song without any copyright issues. We did this by searching up Oh Wonder's website, and then searching the 'Contact' page in order to find the email of their management. Once we did, we sent them this email:

Pitching Our Music Video

After our pitch, the feedback we got was predominately about the shots of Ciara in the drama room, in which we used a light behind her to make her silhouette show up. As we were told that it was not clear enough, we will therefore make sure that we change it by using a brighter spotlight, so that it creates a bolder outline of her silhouette. We were also told to ensure that we have some creative shots, which we will make sure we do when filming. Lastly, as we were told that our idea to have the present day shots of the singer alone in black and white whilst the ones of her with her boyfriend are in colour was a good idea, we will definitely be implementing this into our music video. We will also ensure that there are bubbles in the park shots.

Our Roles

When deciding on our roles for the creation of our music video, we opted to choose based on our strengths and willingness to do the roles. As Mica felt that her strongest skills were camerawork and editing, which the group agreed with, she took those two roles. She also has more knowledge of the camera than the rest of the group, and it will therefore be useful for her to be in charge of the camera. Eden took the role of mise en scene, as she already had several ideas regarding costume and props, whilst I took the roles of director and lighting. This is because I already some plans for lighting and how to set the mood of the music video with it, and when choosing the director, I was open to doing the role and the rest of the group therefore felt that I should take the role. Lastly, our performer is going to be Ciara, as she not only volunteered to be the performer in our video, but we also as a group felt that she was fitting to the type of image we wanted to present in both our indie pop artist and the character in our music video. For this reason, we chose for her to be the performer.

Lyric Annotations

When reading the lyrics of 'Shark' by Oh Wonder, the overall atmosphere of the song appears to be quite melancholic and unsure, showing how the singer is confused over and trying to figure out her feelings for someone -- and how they feel in return. This introspective, nostalgic atmosphere is best seen in the line 'Standing on the world outside', almost as though she is looking from the outside in and contemplating her feelings. As a result, the song paints quite a sad, thoughtful image, which has therefore led us to think of a setting for our music video in which the artist is thinking back on her relationship with her ex-boyfriend, and how she feels for him now, as this would match to the tone of the lyrics.
